Age just makes the material harden and crack. On a mining site in West Africa, I watched a D11 dozer lose a track pump because the wrong viscosity oil was creating excess pressure behind the seal. The fix was simple: match the seal material to the fluid and the operating temperature. Polyurethane seals handle abrasion well, but they don't like high heat. How to Spot a Failing Seal Before It Costs You a Pump

You don't have to pull the pump to know the seals are going. Look for oil weeping around the pump housing, especially at the shaft. Listen for a whine that changes with temperature. Check the return filter for rubber particles. On a Caterpillar 777 haul truck, I once caught a failing shaft seal during a routine oil sample — the lab found silicone, which comes from the seal material, and that gave us a two-week heads-up before the pump started whining. Sealing Them Right the First Time

  2. Drain the oil and inspect the reservoir for particles. If you see shiny metal, you have bigger problems than seals.
  3. Pull the pump and mark the mounting position so you can clock it correctly on reassembly.
  4. Clean the pump exterior before you open it. Dirt from the outside will ruin a rebuild faster than anything inside.
  5. Use a seal kit that matches the original part number. If you don't have the kit, measure the old seal's outer diameter, inner diameter, and cross-section.
  6. Replace all the o-rings and backup rings at the same time. Reusing an old o-ring to save $4 is how you do the job twice.
  7. Prime the pump with clean oil before you spin it up. Dry-starting a new seal will smoke it in seconds.
