On a copper job in Chile, a crew asked a Cat 320 to set a steel conveyor stanchion with what they called an excavator crane setup. The boom was fine, the ground was not. A soft shoulder under the right track settled two inches, the swing got ugly, and the load started to pendulum before the operator even knew he had a problem. Nobody got hurt, but the lesson stuck with me: an excavator crane can do honest lifting, but only when the machine, the rigging, the ground, and the plan all agree.
That job had a clean machine and a tired crew. What it did not have was a lift plan worth the paper it was not written on. The operator was capable. The foreman was in a hurry. The trouble came from the usual place: people confusing "it picked it once" with "it can do it all day." I have seen that mistake on mine sites, road jobs, and pipeline spreads. The repair bill is bad enough. The near miss is what stays in your head.

Why an excavator crane still needs a lift plan
A lift plan does not have to be a three-ring binder, but it does have to answer the real questions. What is the load weight with slings and hooks attached? How far is the center of gravity from the bucket pin? What radius will the lift happen at? Is the machine fitted with the right lifting eye, hook, or approved linkage? Most excavators are rated for specific pick-and-carry or stationary lift conditions, and the rating changes fast as the boom extends. If you do not know the chart, you do not know the job.
I have watched good operators get tripped up by one small detail: the attachment weight. A quick-hitch coupler, a thumb, or a heavy bucket can eat into capacity before the hook ever touches the load. On a 36-ton machine, that difference can be the gap between a tidy placement and a front-end surprise. Field Lesson: the machine's sticker is not a dare. Rigging an excavator crane the way I trust it
The rigging matters as much as the iron. Use the right sling angle, the right shackle size, and hardware that is rated for the load, not just "looks strong enough." If the load can rotate, control it with a tag line. If the pick is awkward, test it a few inches off the deck and pause. That pause tells you if the load is balanced, if the machine is settling, and if the operator can hold the radius without slewing too fast.
I like to keep the boom as tucked as the job allows, because capacity drops as reach grows. A short boom position gives you more margin and less drama. The machine should sit level, with the tracks square to the lift. If the ground is soft, use cribbing, mats, or a better spot. I once saw a spread on a wet pad where the excavator was technically within chart, but the left track sank during the swing and the whole lift turned into a lesson in bad arithmetic.

When the excavator crane should stay home and a real crane should come in
There is a point where a mobile crane, rough-terrain crane, or even a smaller pick-and-place plan is the smarter move. If the load is heavy, long, or needs to travel over people or finished work, stop pretending the excavator can cover for everything. A crane gives you a load chart built for lifting, a better hook arrangement, and usually a clearer path for the rigger and signal person. That is not weakness. That is good planning.
If the job is setting precast vaults, bridge barriers, wellheads, or any load that demands repeated precise placement, a proper crane often saves time after all the setup is counted. An excavator may win on convenience for one-off picks, but the time you lose babysitting a marginal lift can erase every penny you thought you saved. I have seen contractors call for a crane after the second lift, and the mood on site got better immediately.
The small checks that keep the machine upright
Before I trust an excavator crane, I look at the same short list every time. Track tension should be right. Hydraulic oil should be clean and at the correct level. The swing brake should hold the house without drift. Pins, bushings, and boom foot structure should not be loose enough to make the load wander. If the machine has a lift mode, use it. If it has an overload warning, do not ignore it because "we were almost done."
I also want a clear hand signal plan or radio plan. One signal person. One operator. No side chatter. The worst field errors happen when three people think they are helping. If the load is valuable or the consequence is ugly, slow the cycle down and make each pick boring. Boring is what keeps steel off boots and steel buckets off asphalt.
Field Lesson: the best lift I ever saw on a rough site looked slow to the newcomers. It was slow because every hand knew the next move before the machine moved.
What I tell a foreman before the first pick
If you are putting an excavator crane to work tomorrow, walk the pad tonight and again at daylight. Check the slope, check the mats, check the load weight, and check the attachment paperwork. Do not let a tired crew improvise because the truck is waiting. A ten-minute reset can save a whole day of grief.
And if the job feels borderline, call the crane supplier, the dealer, or a rigging outfit that does this for a living. That is not me being cautious for effect. That is me remembering the jobs where "it should be fine" turned into a bent plan and a long meeting. The right machine in the right spot makes the work look easy. The wrong setup makes every person on site work harder than they should.
