At a copper mine outside Calama, Chile, I watched a haul truck operator climb down after hearing a faint hiss near the left front wheel. The tire looked fine. A closer inspection found a damaged brake cooling line spraying oil onto a hot component. That truck did not move another foot, and the operator went home safely. An equipment pre start checklist is not paperwork for the office. Done properly, it is the first maintenance inspection of every shift.

I spent 30 years around Caterpillar machines, from compact loaders to 797 haul trucks, and I learned that serious failures usually leave a clue first. A wet fitting, a loose guard, a warning light, or a slightly different sound can give you time to stop a bad day. Here is how to build a practical inspection routine that operators will actually use.

What an Equipment Pre Start Checklist Must Cover

A useful equipment pre start checklist follows a consistent path around the machine. Do not wander randomly and assume you will remember what you saw. Start at the operator station, walk around the left side, inspect the front, continue down the right side, and finish where you began. The route matters because it prevents skipped areas.

Begin with the ground beneath the machine. Fresh engine oil is dark and slippery, hydraulic oil can look amber or nearly clear, and coolant often leaves a colored stain or crust after drying. A small puddle under a loader is not automatically harmless. Identify the fluid before starting the engine, then trace it to the source. Check for broken glass, chunks of metal, loose hardware, and tire damage while you are down there.

Inspect the machine body for cracked welds, bent access steps, missing handrails, and damaged guards. Look at pins, bushings, cylinder rods, hose connections, and grease points. On an excavator, a bright ring of oil around a boom cylinder rod deserves attention. On a dozer, check the blade cutting edge and tilt cylinder mounts. On a wheel loader, examine the articulation joint and steering cylinders closely.

Fluids, Tires, Tracks, and Attachments

With the engine stopped and parked safely, check engine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil, transmission oil, and fuel according to the manufacturer’s procedure. Some reservoirs must be checked cold, while others require a specific temperature or machine position. Adding the wrong fluid, or filling a tank that is already full, creates a repair instead of preventing one.

Look at the engine oil level and condition on the dipstick. Milky oil can point to coolant contamination, while a strong diesel smell can indicate fuel dilution. Never remove a pressurized radiator cap on a hot engine. Use the sight gauge for hydraulic oil when provided, and wipe the area around the cap before opening any reservoir. Dirt inside a hydraulic tank can damage pumps and control valves quickly.

Tires need more than a quick glance. Check for cuts, exposed cords, sidewall bulges, missing valve caps, and rocks wedged between dual tires. Do not stand in the danger zone while examining a damaged tire. A mining tire failure can release enormous energy. On tracked equipment, inspect track tension, loose shoes, packed material, damaged rollers, and leaking final drives. A track that is too tight increases wear; one that is too loose can derail.

Attachments must be secured before travel. Confirm bucket teeth, forks, quick couplers, pins, cutting edges, ripper shanks, and retaining clips are installed correctly. A quick coupler that appears connected but has not captured the attachment is a serious hazard. Operators should verify the locking indicator and perform the manufacturer-approved test at ground level, never by lifting a person or swinging the attachment over anyone.

Field Lesson: In Western Australia, we found a loader operating with one fork retaining pin missing. The operator had noticed the pin during the walkaround but assumed the other pin would hold. It would not have held a suspended load on uneven ground. A five-minute stop prevented a dropped pallet and a much longer investigation.

Starting the Machine and Checking Controls

Before starting, clear the cab and deck of loose tools, rags, bottles, and grease tubes. Adjust the seat and mirrors, fasten the seat belt, and confirm the parking brake is engaged. Check that the transmission or travel control is in neutral. Sound the horn before cranking, and make sure people nearby understand that the engine is about to start.

Once the machine runs, watch the gauges and warning lamps. Oil pressure should build within the normal time shown in the operator’s manual. Confirm charging voltage, coolant temperature, hydraulic pressure indicators, fuel level, and active fault codes. Do not silence an alarm simply because the machine still moves. A warning lamp is information about a system that needs attention.

Test the service brake, parking brake, steering, travel controls, lights, horn, backup alarm, cameras, windshield wipers, and emergency stop system where fitted. Keep the first movements slow and controlled. Test hydraulic functions with the attachment low and away from workers. Listen for pump whine, unusual knocks, belt squeal, air leaks, and changes in engine response.

Safety Alert: Never troubleshoot a moving machine from the ground, reach through a pinch point, or crawl beneath a raised attachment supported only by hydraulics. Lower implements to the ground, shut down, isolate stored energy, and follow site lockout procedures before reaching into a danger area. If a guard must be removed, the machine is not ready for production.

What to Write Down and When to Stop

A checkbox saying “good” is weak maintenance information. Record the hour meter, machine identification, date, operator, and exact defect. “Hydraulic leak at right lift cylinder hose fitting” is useful. “Leak” is not. A photo with a location marker can save a technician a long search, especially on a spread-out mine site.

Separate defects into three practical categories. A safety-critical fault, such as failed brakes, damaged steering, exposed electrical wiring, a cracked boom, or an unsecured attachment, means tag out and report immediately. A production risk, such as a leaking hose, low tire pressure, overheating trend, or active diagnostic code, requires maintenance review before the machine is assigned hard work. A minor housekeeping issue can be corrected during the shift without hiding more serious defects.

Do not let production pressure rewrite the equipment pre start checklist. I have seen supervisors ask for “just one load” after a brake warning appeared. That load became an uncontrolled roll toward a berm. The machine was eventually stopped, but the decision exposed everyone nearby to needless danger. The right response is to park safely, isolate the machine, notify the foreman, and call a qualified technician when the cause is not obvious.

Building a Routine Crews Will Follow

Keep the checklist specific to the machine family. A skid steer needs attention on the safety interlock, hydraulic quick couplers, tires or tracks, lift arms, and attachment pins. A motor grader needs articulation, circle drive, moldboard components, tandem cases, and steering linkage. A haul truck needs braking systems, tire condition, retarder controls, body supports, fire suppression, and access ladders.

Use a laminated card for dirty field work and a digital form for trend tracking. The format matters less than completion before operation. Have the operator report repeat defects, not merely mark them each morning. If the same hose needs topping off for a week, the checklist is revealing a maintenance failure rather than solving it.

The best equipment pre start checklist is short enough to complete and detailed enough to catch real trouble. Train new operators beside an experienced hand, demonstrate what a normal machine sounds like, and review defects at the daily meeting. A machine that starts clean and works safely earns its production hours. One that is rushed into service can cost a tire, a shift, or a life.

Field Lesson: The strongest crews I worked with treated the walkaround as part of operating, not as a delay before operating. That attitude came from repetition. They knew exactly where to look, what normal felt like, and when to shut down. That is the standard worth building on every site.
